Everybody talks regarding VOIP but except for standalone-phones including software solutions there is not much available. Especially on the mobile phone market it seems to take a long time to obtain VOIP on your phone, smartphone or PDA. the is because phone creators are working with the major carriers who do not need to see inexpensive VOIP calls with normal handsets. The profit margin will be too low. There are however some other solutions to obtain the power of VOIP on your phone. Web-activated calls are phone calls initiated over the internet including routed over the internet between 2 (or more) normal phones. That means you do not need any special equipment except a phone including a web-browser with internet connection to initiate a call.
Basically you need to fill in your number including the number you need to call in a web interface including hit the call button. A computer could initiate a call between the 2 phones. It could first call your phone on which you obtain a computer voice asking you to wait for a moment until it connects to the second phone. After that you have a line just like it will be doing a regular phone call. Some providers, in particular Jajah.com provide free calls between its users. That means everybody who has registered his number with a free Jajah account, should call any other Jajah user for free (excluding some very remote countries including some mobile phone networks). For example a cellphone user in the US could call a cellphone user in China completely for free.
Until now there was 1 problem, especially for BlackBerry users. You were in need of a desktop computer with a browser to enter the phone numbers including activate the call. But now there is a free utility program for the BlackBerry called BBCalls which plugs into the BlackBerry address book including allows you to call any contact via the Jajah service by simply clicking on it. Internally the program loads the web site including activates the call. You could be in need of a data connection, but the should be available for nearly every BlackBerry users anyway.
